When the Back Cove 39O was released in late 2020, power came from triple Mercury V10 400-hp Verado outboards. But at the 2023 Newport International Boat Show, Back Cove Yachts showed off a 39O with twin V12 Verado 600-hp outboards. Prospective buyers can now choose which of the two power arrangements they would like on the transom of their 39O.
With triple Mercury V10 400-hp Verado engines, the 39O tops out at 45.4 knots, versus the twin Mercury V12 Verado 600-hp engines, which top out at 45.9 knots. However, the twin 600 outboards weigh more than the triple 400s, although they offer newer technologies.
The V12 Verado 600s are the first outboards to feature a steerable gearcase and two-speed transmission. The steerable gearcase helps save space on the transom by allowing builders to place the outboards closer together. Their dual props also contra-rotate, which is smoother and creates more torque that gets the 39O out of the hole faster.
And then there’s the cool factor. Your neighbors at the marina will definitely think you’re a cool cat with those 600s on the transom.
